All Monsters Are Human

All Monsters Are Human
The Grotesque Within Us

A collaboration as part of steirischer herbst ’26

I crafted the masks using children’s toys and discarded instrument parts. In doing so, I found joy and felt instinctively drawn to creating these figures. The ogre represents the “shadow”—a projection of greed and selfishness. In fairy tales, they are devourers of children and humans. Although they are part of us, they are simultaneously the source of our fear regarding the unknown sides of our own selves. In reality, however, the ogres in fairy tales are not particularly clever. When it comes to human greed, the intellect is of no help at all—so what is it that actually fuels the fear?
